I love everything you've shared in this episode, Terrance, and thank you so much for your continuous support! It means the world to me.
My recording came out fine despite my concerns. Maybe I'm being too critical about my own voice and performance! Anyway, I think I'm going to get one of those wee lavalier microphones, I think that would do wonders for the quality of my sound. I plan to do more reading videos in the future and I want to deliver a decent quality to my readers (and your listeners).
And just to say I hope you won't be censored and lose your air time for reading my and Caitlin's words. I do know it's a very real possibility, sadly, yet I'd like to think that somewhere out there, at least one person heard this, felt some shock and it made them think.
Since I post these podcasts on Substack, I am not worried about being censored there. Now, YouTube is another matter. I also worry about other American platforms so I just use a redirect to my Substack page and my website. So far, I haven't had any issues but that could change if things continue to get worse here. My website is set up for viewing in the U.S. and the EU so I hope I don't have issues in the future. I am using an Italian company in Milano to host it on their servers so that is helping to be sure.
I will be looking for more of your poems like this one to either let you read again, as I did last week, or read it myself, with your permission. I will continue to read poems and stories that show the world the cruelties of the empire. They are so important in this time of crisis in Gaza, and now Israel is trying to go again in Lebanon.
I was in Lebanon back in 1983 during the war then so I know what they are going through to a degree. Looking back, I am a bit ashamed of myself for being an unwilling participant in the American imperialism back then and my other exploits in the middle east in subsequent years. I have learned my lessons way too late in life to change what happened. Now, I can add my voice to all of the rest of us who want to the genocide to stop. I particularly want Israel to disappear back into the desert so people can live there in peace and safety. I had occasion to visit Israel in 1985 as a soldier and did not like them at all. They have only become worse since then.
Please keep writing and I will keep broadcasting them to the world. My podcast goes out over all of the major podcast platforms around the world, such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts and so may others so anything I read aloud or record the author goes across the globe to anyone who has a cell phone, iPad or a computer. Spotify is the biggest platform so far with all of its subsidiaries. Maybe, just maybe, we can reach out to a lot of other people who sympathize with the Palestinians and Lebanese and give voice around the world.
Go raibh maith agat mo chara. I look forward to more poems.
None of us can change the past. I bet most of us would love to, but the best we can do is take lessons from past mistakes, acknowledge our role and privilege and learn accountability. You served in the military because of what the society served you, you didn't know any better. You know better now, and you're vocal about it. It absolutely makes a difference. Just look at how many veterans remained sucked into the system and to this day glorify the US and their attacks on Iraq, Afghanistan etc. You ARE making a difference.
